One of the most popular free keyword tools used by many search engine marketers is the infamous Overture keyword suggestion tool; until a few weeks ago… that is.
Apparently, Overture had some issues with their keyword tool intermittently going offline. It has been said that they were having technical issues and that it should be up and running again soon.
Their keyword tool is indeed up and running now, but some interesting things happened because of it. Word quickly spread throughout the Internet community that it was being taken down for good. So WordTracker another well-known, but paid service, quickly seized the opportunity and launched a free keyword tool of their own.
Between these two keyword tools, how do you know which one is more accurate? Technically you don’t. Overture basis their keyword suggestion tool on searches for advertising, while WordTracker pulls from an average of searches from different search engines. If you type in the same keyword in both tools you get completely different results.
So how are you supposed to know which keyword tool to use? In my experience, the results generated from these tools should only be used as a guide; hence the term ‘suggestion’. You can use one or both of these tools because they are good for giving variations of the main keyword; however, once you have chosen your keywords you should do more research and look at other items such as page competition.
Because these free keyword tools have billions of hits per month, it is now being rumored that free keyword tools are soon going to be a thing of the past.
What do you think? What free keyword tools out there do you think are more reliable?
