Adsense is a great way to monetize a small site but only when a webmaster knows the intricacies of Adsense monetization.
Adsense Is Not Always the Best Way to Monetize a Site
There are whole groups of niches, where Adsense generates next to nothing and no matter how great the content is and how much traffic the site gets, revenues are barely enough to cover the hosting fee and pay the expenses. The reason is that the niche itself is not profitable enough when monetized with Adsense.
That is why choosing the niche is one of the most important decisions a webmaster must make. It is not a secret that as far as Adsense is concerned, not all topics are equal. Some niches are known for their low CTR (Click Through Rate) even when the served ads are relevant. Computer topics are one of the most typical examples of sites, where Adsense ads are simply ignored by users.
Website Niches Where Adsense Works Well
On the opposite pole are the niches where Adsense is a great way to monetize a site. The list of these niches is long but the most notable ones are:
- Dating
- Health
- Money
- Travel
- Pets
- Children and Parenting
- Women issues
- Shopping
As seen from the list, the most profitable Adsense niches are those that have a wide appeal and deal with everyday problems. This is not surprising – people use the Net to find solutions to the problems they have and that is why these topics are among the most popular ones.
Another reason why the above mentioned niches are profitable for Adsense monetization is that many Adsense ads are actually leads to CPA offers. Since the top converting CPA offers are these that solve problems (lose weight, get rid of debt, find a partner, make money, etc.) there are many more (and more generous) advertisers in these areas than in other areas.
However, the fact that a site is within a profitable niche doesn't make it profitable by default. Usually the most profitable Adsense niches are the most competitive ones as well. That is why it is not realistic to expect that any site in the above niches will become a cash cow.
The opposite is also true. There are many examples of sites in niches, which are considered to be less profitable but where Adsense brings a lot of revenue. The secrets of success vary and they include factors such as outstanding content, less competition, better promotion to name a few.
That is why, when a webmaster is planning a site, he or she should not blindly choose the niche just because this niche is said to be profitable. Instead, a webmaster should make his or her own research and only after that should decide which niche to pick to build an Adsense site and which keywords to optimize for.
